PAKISTAN WATCH
You, the People of Pakistan
Turbulent times, for a nation, throw historic opportunities asking its people to take charge of their destiny. Such are the times to take the new direction, severing the umbilical cord of the legacy. The history of Pakistan is replete with assassinations and carnages, but in the death of Benazir Bhutto comes one more fortuitous moment, for the people of Pakistan to steer away from the ghastly past
; A moment potent to be a turning point for a nation.
The periodic bouts of emergencies and anarchies are not something Pakistan is unfamiliar with, but the true democracy is. Pakistan is not a failed democracy but a democracy that never was. It was the Westminster legacy and the Indian twin hood that got the kid of Pakistan a ‘ western toy’ named democracy as birthday gift it could never handle half nicely, leave far its operational enjoyment. The founder father, ‘a liberal’ westerner, also unfortunately half way left the ‘dough’ of democracy for the mullahs, madrassas and the military ,only to be made into a dangerous cocktail mix with fundamentalism.
From the assassination of its first Prime minister till 27th of December when Benazir is killed, ironically at the same place, Pakistan has witnessed many tragic moments all quietly buried in its history after street shows of lamentations.
Benazir Bhutto was prophetically right when she said, “It is dangerous to stand upto a military dictatorship, but more dangerous not”. To save Pakistan from annihilations she exposed herself to the danger of death. She has died for her nation, but Pakistan will live for the cause she stood for, still remains a ‘billion dollar question’.
