Some Consequences of Performance Art (Part II)
Performance art with its three characters, as I explained in the first part of my two articles, brings some specific consequences.
In one side, the emerging of performance art needs the presence of discursive concept. But in the other side, performance art must exist in the form of non-discursive images visual. The contradiction between this two propensities is inherent in the relation between words and images. Worlds were always caught by images, and images were understood when it could be ejaculated.
In one side, there is an idealism or intention to catch/gain the depth of mystery of experiences and the life. In the other side, the performance art wishes to communicate itself for audiens. But this communicability need brings performance art became banal/superficial, verbal, and trivial art.
In one side, performance art has the possible to create new understanding on reality, but this mission was often done by breaking the forms of taboo in society. As the effort to break this taboo, artists often use their naked body. This scandalous effort, in their first performance art, was used as the effek shock for taboo in society.
Intuitively, artists often tend to affirm their selves. In the other hand, performance art is temporal. After seeing the performance art, audiens or people just have an impression or cogitation, then it will be lost. Performance art differs from sculpture or painting that can be seen again. Additionally, the selling potency of performance art is under the sculpture or painting. Sometimes, performance art instead couldn’t be sold. That is the reason why performance art needs new concept of art and the meaning of becoming artist. In the performance art, artist can be subsided, intervened by audiens and
dominated by events. In this case, new concept of art and its connection to really life became one of its radical aspects.
